
Born: March 19, 1944, east of Cottonwood on a small farm
Al’s family moved to a farm near Mayfield and he attended
Itasca ISD for 12 years.
He worked for 2 ½ years in McGregor to earn enough money to
attend Hill Junior, where he received an Associate’s Degree in
engineering in the fall of 1967.
He joined the National Guard in Waco, and after 3 years was
transferred to an Army reserve engineering unit in Dallas for 3
additional years.
He married Elizabeth mach of Ennis, Texas in 1968, and they
raised two sons, Ray and Paul. The Vanek’s have 6 grandsons.
From 1967 to 1998 Al worked as a manager for a large
telecommunications company in North Dallas before retiring.
In Dallas, Al received an Associate’s degree in Mid-
Management, a bachelor’s degree in management, and a Masters
degree in Human Relations and Business.
Shortly after retiring, Al formed VCS Services that managed the
construction of residential, municipal, commercial, and industrial
projects.
In 2003 Al and his wife moved to West to begin managing the
West Lumber Co.
Al’s hobbies include hunting, fishing, and various forms of sports.
His favorite pastime is being outdoors, mainly in the woods.
Al has been a musician for over 45 years. He has performed
and managed polka bands at various festivals and other events. He
was featured on a BBC special that was mainly aired in Europe and
currently on the RFDTV channel.
